Pre-equilibrium emission is a process that occurs early in a nuclear reaction where a nucleon or cluster of nucleons may be ejected from a nucleus before it reaches equilibrium. This happens within the first few femtoseconds after a projectile interacts with a target nucleus, forming a compound nucleus. The ejected particles, called pre-compound particles, are emitted before the compound nucleus reaches equilibrium, and the process is known as pre-equilibrium emission.
